“Lake Como Light and Life of the Italian Lake Country” Photography Workshop
The International Center of Photography, in collaboration with ExperiencePlus! Bicycle Tours, invites you to the “Lake Como Light and Life of the Italian Lake Country” photography workshop, August 7 – 17, 2015. Following in the vision and legacy of Holly Smith Pedlosky, founder of Italy Photo Workshops, this visual retreat is designed to explore your personal relationship with photography while basking in the beautiful landscape of Lake Como at the foothills of the Swiss and Italian Alps in Italy.
“To go to Italy...is like a most fascinating act of self-discovery—back, back down the old ways of time. Strange and wonderful chords awaken in us and vibrate again after many hundreds of years of forgetfulness.” D.H. Lawrence
Taught by New York photographer Karen Marshall, an expert at visual storytelling, the 2015 workshop will provide a nurturing environment to consider personal vision while offering a deeper understanding of how to create cohesive and articulate bodies of work. Assisted by award-winning Italian photographer and videographer, Alessandro Ghirelli, Karen will share her expertise in the art of conveying ideas about people and place within their cultural landscape.
Monica Malpezzi Price, co-owner of ExperiencePlus!, is pleased to team up with Karen and Alessandro while directing the 2015 photo workshop. Monica, an Italian-American, is part of the family who first introduced Holly to her “authentic” Italy, and encouraged her to offer photography workshops abroad. Having made Italy her home, Monica has assisted with photo workshops in Venice and Lake Como since she was a child.
During this 10-day visual retreat set in the breathtaking environs of Lake Como, participants will have the opportunity to explore the beauty of the surrounding landscape, gardens, villages, and the vibrant light and culture of this magical lake country. Join us at the spectacular Villa Cipressi, nestled in three acres of lush gardens in the town of Varenna on Lake Como, Europe’s deepest lake. Situated in the foothills of the Italian Alps, the beauty of Varenna was the inspiration for British inventor and photographer, Fox Talbot, to invent photography on paper while on his honeymoon in 1833.
Meeting daily at the Hotel Villa Cipressi, the program will be split between group photographic adventures and in-depth critiques balanced by free time to discover the magic of Lake Como. Critical discussions about intent, editing, sequencing, and the creation of visual stories together with the daily practice of photographing will encourage the formation of a unified photographic voice. There will also be ample opportunity for casual conversation, one-to-one feedback, and the chance to learn within a small supportive community.
