Magazine Editor Shares Her Experience on a Bicycle Tour of France

Fort Collins, Colo. – The charm of bicycle travel has grown over the years including with solo travelers. The Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) Industry Snapshot shows 20% Solo Adventure Travelers.  ExperiencePlus! solo travelers increased 1.5% from 2014-2015 and comprise about 15% of bookings. Even so, anxieties about traveling solo can run high. “First off, talk to the operator and choose a tour with other solo travelers,” says Norie Quintos, editor at large for National Geographic Travel Media, who chose ExperiencePlus! when she decided to go on a bike tour—solo--in Europe last fall.

Quintos, a travel veteran (she’s been traveling since she was six months old) but a relative newbie on bike trips, went on the 11-day tour of France’s Dordogne Valley. She described the trip as “a rollicking ride along one of Europe’s most underrated rivers through France’s celebrated wine and truffle country; with a soupcon of foie gras and prehistoric cave culture.”  Norie was interviewed for the February issue of the Rambler newsletter, published by ExperiencePlus! Other tips for traveling solo on a group bike tour:

  • Pick a tour with enough people going so there are a wide range of abilities, ensuring you will always have one or two people to ride with.
  • The list of participants is often circulated in advance; reach out to the other guests and introduce yourself beforehand
  • Ask the operator to inform the guides beforehand that you are solo and ask them to make sure you are introduced to others in the group. ExperiencePlus guides are trained to do so and as a matter of course will invite solo participants to dine with them on evenings when there is no group dinner.

The travel planners at ExperiencePlus will assist in choosing a tour that fits your needs.  Check out listings of all destinations and styles of bicycle travel at www.experienceplus.com.
