PRESS RELEASE

Uganda Welcomes Three Newborn Mountain Gorillas

Great Safaris feature Gorilla Trekking Programs

GLENDALE, Cali. — Award-winning luxury safari outfitter Great Safaris is pleased to announce the births of three baby mountain gorillas in recent weeks. The endangered Mountain Gorilla population is protected in Uganda while also being accessible to travelers fortunate enough to receive a Gorilla Trekking Permit. Great Safaris arranges safaris to Uganda to view and track Mountain Gorillas.

Approximately 480 mountain gorillas, more than half the world's population of this critically endangered species reside in the dense forests of southwestern Uganda, and that number has grown with the birth of three infants since mid-August. Adventurous visitors tracking the habituated Habinyanja gorilla family in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park spotted the newest arrival in late September.

Uganda has 12 habituated mountain gorilla families (11 in Bwindi and one in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park), and the opportunity to track them in their natural habitat tops the bucket lists of wildlife enthusiasts and intrepid travelers worldwide. Researchers began the Habinyanja family's two-year habituation process in 1997, spending time with them daily until they became at ease around humans. The other two infants belong to the Bushaho and Bikyirigi families, which are currently undergoing habituation and cannot yet be tracked by visitors.

The Uganda Discovery Safari includes game drives into Queen Elizabeth National Park, river excursions, along with a visit to the spectacular Murchison Falls. The highlight is an unforgettable trek to see the Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The trek can take anywhere from half an hour to 7 hours requiring a reasonable degree of fitness along with a sturdy pair of walking boots! Experience the extraordinary feeling of sitting in the dense rain forest viewing some of the few remaining mountain gorillas; there are only about 650 of these beautiful creatures left in the world. Guests are allowed exactly one hour with the gorillas before returning to the base station.
