Safari extensions: Making the most of your holiday in Africa

Safari extensions: Making the most of your holiday in Africa

GLENDALE, Cali. – Don’t want to leave the wilds of Africa just yet? With more than four decades of travel experience in Africa, Dave Herbert, owner of the award-winning luxury safari company Great Safaris, suggests extending your trip of a lifetime with adventures you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

If you’re on safari in Southern Africa, an extension to Victoria Falls is a must. Known as Mosi-oa-Tunya or the Smoke that Thunders, this immense natural wonder straddles the borders of Zambia and Zimbabwe, where the Zambezi River pours into a series of gorges, zigzagging across the landscape. At roughly twice the height of Niagara Falls, Victoria Falls boasts the largest sheet of falling water in the world. A unique feature of the falls is a deep pool adjacent to Livingstone Island called the Devil’s Pool. Guests can take an exhilarating swim while looking out over the edge of the falls.

If you have selected an itinerary in East Africa, you can chose to extend your trip for a chance to track mountain gorillas or relax on the beach in one of several, breathtaking locations. The prime tracking area for gorillas is Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda or Rwanda’s Volcanoes Nation Park. Embark on a slow-pace climb through the verdant forest to find these gentle giants then enjoy watching them interact with each other and their environment. If you desire a relaxing beach retreat after your safari adventure, head to the coast of Mozambique or across the channel to Mauritius. If you’re in Tanzania, Zanzibar and the Seychelles are the best options for a beach and bush extension.
