Follow the Trail of the Vikings to the World’s Largest Island

REYKJAVIK, Iceland— With their unforgettable fjords, steep mountainsides and picturesque views of icebergs and volcanoes, Iceland and Greenland are abundant with iconic scenery and rich history. Iceland ProCruises, an Iceland based company and a division of the leading tour operator Iceland ProTravel, transports travelers to the naturally magnificent Artic region for this eleven-day journey. In August 2015, On the Trails of the Vikings delivers an unforgettable experience to Iceland— the land of fire and ice— and Greenland— the world’s largest island!

The cruise route begins on Iceland’s west coast and navigates through breathtakingly beautiful sights, including an exploration of the Snafellsnes Peninsula and Breidafjördur Bay. Passengers also visit the secluded peninsula town of Isafjördur, capital of the Westfjords region and connected to the rest of Iceland by only a narrow strip of land. As the Ocean Diamond continues its journey, the ship sails across the Denmark Strait towards Greenland, showcasing the beauty that surrounds the world’s largest island along the way. Upon arrival at the small island of Hvallssey, passengers have the opportunity to explore some of the best preserved Viking ruins of Greenland.

The itinerary then brings passengers to the town of Narsarsuaq and the small settlement of Qassiarsuk, founded by legendary Viking rebel and leader Erik the Red, who famously named the area “green land” because of the region’s fjords and green, fertile valleys. Next, while visiting Greenland’s southernmost town of Nanortalik, travelers will explore several ruins of the Norse settlers and view the countless seals of the region!

As the Ocean Diamond makes its way back to Iceland, a final stop is made five miles off the coast of southern Iceland at the Westman Islands. These islands were formed roughly 10,000 years ago by submarine volcanic eruptions, which still threaten residents of the group’s only inhabited island, Heimaey. Take one final exploration in the Zodiacs to visit caves, view the local bird life and watch for whales as this unforgettable journey comes to an end.
