Fishing in February: The Olympic Peninsula Salmon Derby

PORT ANGELES, Wash.— It’s no secret Washington’s Olympic Peninsula is known as an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise, and it’s that time of year again that has the fishing communities alive with excitement as the annual Olympic Peninsula Salmon Derby prepares to kick off the festivities on Friday, February 20th, 2015. Hosted by the Gardiner Salmon Derby Association, the highly-anticipated, nonprofit event will take place all weekend, complete with cash prizes, an awards ceremony and free barbeque!

Spanning from Port Angeles to Whidbey Island, the event takes place on Discovery Bay, which opens onto the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The Salmon Derby is a beloved event and longtime tradition that generates funds to support emergency services and benefit the community. All fish of six pounds or more are eligible for ‘Mystery Fish’ prizes throughout this upcoming weekend that is sure to bring a smile to fishers and onlookers alike!
