October 2015 marks 15 years of romance, adventure and award-winning customer service at Hamanasi Adventure and Dive Resort, a top boutique eco-resort in Belize. Since day one, this eco-chic resort has offered luxurious, sustainable accommodations outside the quaint village of Hopkins, away from the tourist path and just steps from the Caribbean Sea.
Hamanasi Resort is the dream-turned reality of two adventurous Americans, Dana and David Krauskopf, who turned their vision of a little resort on a secluded beach into a successful model for sustainable tourism. The Krauskopf’s story spans continents and is comprised of adventures from Tanzania to Thailand, careers in Chicago and Moscow, and the wild dream of owning their own little hotel on the beach.
On opening day in October 2000, Hamanasi Resort’s 25 staff members welcomed guests to eight exquisite rooms on 20 acres of littoral forest. Today, the resort has 125 employees caring for 30 acres of tropical paradise with 25 rooms, including 13 private treehouses – the first resort in Belize to offer these unique accommodations – two honeymoon suites and 10 beachfront rooms. In 2010, the resort added an onsite organic garden, growing more than 35 crops in 40,000 square feet with no artificial fertilizers or pesticides. Just this year, the resort completed 10,000 square feet of renovations and additions to the Great House, while remaining committed to a sustainable process.
Along the way, Hamanasi has earned a lot of “firsts”, including becoming the first beachfront resort in Belize to receive Green Globe certification, earn Sustainable Tourism International’s STEP Bronze Level Eco-certification and become “Certified Organic” by the Belize Organic Alliance.
The resort has experienced continual levels of growth thanks in part to its three core values: guests are treated like family and enjoy an experience of a lifetime; employees receive incentive and ongoing training programs that encourage a happy, skilled and proud staff; and the resort works with local organizations to help in crisis as well as with everyday projects.
In the beginning, it took the Krauskopfs countless hours of planning, learning about a new culture, navigating through bureaucratic hurdles and having an enduring “entrepreneurial spirit” in order to achieve their wildest dream. Going forward, the Krauskopfs will continue to dream big and remain dedicated to exceeding traveler as well as industry expectations.
