Original Play by Seven Time Emmy Award Winner Mark Saltzman Takes the Stage July, 2015
SHERIDAN, Wyo.— As the first ever Wyoming Theater Festival draws near, the booming arts community of Sheridan is gearing up to host a bevy of talent hailing from across the country. From July 13th-25th, the two-week long summer event will feature original works by visiting playwrights, including Romeo and Bernadette by Mark Saltzman.
Mark Saltzman – playwright, songwriter, television writer, screenwriter and recipient of countless accolades – began his career in New York with Jim Henson, writing for The Muppets, and his Sesame Street sketches and songs earned him seven Emmy Awards. Despite having garnered impressive recognition from the start, Saltzman continued developing a name for himself with original works, such as cabaret shows and musicals that played at The Ballroom, Soho Rep, 13th Street Theater and the Village Gate.
In addition to his acclaimed contributions to The Muppets, Saltzman’s work in film and television includes Mrs. Santa Claus, The Adventures of Milo and Otis, Three Ninjas Kick Back and the television movie The Red Sneakers, which aired on Showtime in 2004 and was nominated for a Writers Guild Award. Saltzman has also written and sold screenplays to SONY, Universal and Disney.
Saltzman’s musical play, The Tin Pan Alley Rag opened at the Pasadena Playhouse in 1997 and was nominated for five Los Angeles Ovation Awards, including Best Musical. Romeo and Bernadette – which will play at the Mars Theater in Sheridan, Wyoming at 2PM on July 15, 19 and 23, and at 7PM on July 13, 17 and 21 – has played at the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami and has been produced at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey, as well as internationally in Seoul and Manila. Romeo and Bernadette was the winner of four PHILSTAGE Awards in 2009, including Outstanding Musical Production and Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Musical Production, and was nominated for seven Florida Carbonell Awards, including Best New Work and Best Production of a Musical.
About Romeo and Bernadette
Romeo returns? Yes, to 1960 mob Brooklyn where he finds himself again torn between two feuding families – and this time they’re Mafia. Paper Mill Playhouse in (appropriately) New Jersey presented the original production of this comic romp which is currently being updated and retooled for a New York production. Variety called the musical “A deliriously schmaltzy pastiche. Proudly lowbrow, shamelessly cute, politically incorrect, retro-hip and basically adorable.” The New York Times said Romeo and Bernadette is “Hilariously perfect. Mr. Saltzman gets good comic mileage out of the stranger-in-a-strange land conceit. It is a well-work gimmick and it is to Mr. Saltzman’s credit that he makes it fresh.”
