Bhutanese Textiles and Festivals
Fall tour hosted by founder Toni Neubauer
INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Myths & Mountains offers a unique journey focused on the Bhutanese textiles used by families during festivals and daily living. The fall trip will be led by Myths’ President and Bhutan expert, Toni Neubauer, and textile expert, Sangay Wanchuk, and is timed to coincide with the vibrant Thimphu festival, September 26 – October 6. Stay in private homes and explore textile collections that have been passed down through the family for generations. In Thimphu, visit the textile museum and the handicraft schools, as well as the private home of a well-known weaver. Travelling on to the Gangtey, Gompa and Pelila Pass region, drop in on a weaver of Chhana fabrics (Chhana is a coarse cloth made of wool and worn mainly during colder months). Along the drive, there will be an opportunity to identify the plants used to dye the fabrics. The highlight is the Thimphu Festival, where the textiles come to life both as costumes for the dancers and the fine clothes worn by the local celebrants.
A complete listing of trips for 2017 is available on the Myths and Mountains website, including departures to Asia, led by Founder Toni Neubauer, and South America, led by Allie Almario. Of special note are the trips which include visits to the READ Global community resource centers in Asia. READ was started by Toni in 1991 as a way to give back to communities in the destinations to which they travel.
