Captain of MV OCEAN DIAMOND Makes History
Captain Hans Söderholm first non-Icelandic captain to hold permits for Icelandic Harbors
REYKJAVIK, Iceland— Offering discerning travelers unique experiences in Iceland and Greenland in their third season of operation; Iceland ProCruises announce Captain Hans Söderholm from Finland is the first non-Icelandic captain ever to holds an official piloting permit for Icelandic harbors.
MV OCEAN DIAMOND is sailing regularly around beautiful Iceland during summer season on behalf of Iceland ProCruises, a tour-operator specialized in Iceland-and Greenland tourism. Their 10-day circumnavigation of Iceland, stopping at 10 ports is their signature trip. Now her captain has been honored as the first foreigner ever to receive an official permit to navigate in the narrow and shallow waters of Isafjördur without the help of a local pilot.
Captain Söderholm qualified for this through many years of experience of sailing the area aboard OCEAN DIAMOND according to local authorities’ statements during a celebratory ceremony. To extend this special permit onto the harbor areas of Husavik and Akureyri on the coast of northern Iceland is the captain’s next goal.
From the middle of May to mid-July and then again in September 8 circumnavigation-tours are offered with Reykjavik, Iceland’s vibrant capital city, as the start and ending point. On her way around the mystical island of volcanoes the ship will stop at Stykkisholmur, Isafjördur, Siglufjördur, the island of Grimsey off the wild northern coast, Akureyri, Husavik, Seydisfjördur, Djupivogur and Vestmanneyjar. MV OCEAN DIAMOND is a modern but cozy cruise ship of a rather small size that allows her to visit places near the coast where large ships cannot go. The cruises are best described as expeditions which are soft adventures; accompanied by a team of very experienced and adventurous Icelandic experts speaking both German and English. Passengers will enjoy the spectacular nature of Iceland from the waterside as well as during a wide variety of optional interesting and, perhaps, adventurous shore excursions. The combination of experiencing both the natural wonders of the island and the Icelandic way of life makes this cruise an unforgettable journey.
Prices for this 10-day cruise (9 nights on board) start at $1.995 pp in lowest cabin category.
