Centenary Voyage Commemorates Shackleton Expedition
Ice Tracks Expeditions Announce Dates
Ice Tracks is delighted to share the final commemorative voyage for the Centenary of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Honoring Sir Ernest Shackleton and the men of the Endurance and the Ross Sea Party is at the very heart of this unique voyage and that is the reason they have included the crossing of South Georgia ice field led by polar adventurer extraordinaire Charlie Paton as part of this superb and extended itinerary!
In May 1916 Shackleton and 2 of his loyal companions made an unprecedented crossing of the South Georgia ice field to reach the whaling station and get help to rescue the rest of his party left behind on Elephant Island. This event was precipitated by the sinking of the Endurance, the ship Shackleton was attempting to use to cross the continent of Antarctica. The ship became trapped in ice and drifted for more than a year.
The itinerary includes the Falkland archipelago and Port Stanley, the spectacular coast of South Georgia, the whaling station of Grytviken with Elephant Island high on the agenda as we appeal to the weather gods to allow these landings. The ship will continue to head South to the Antarctic peninsula and into the ice of the Weddell Sea to experience the breath-taking ice cliffs and the cobalt blue ice bergs that dwarf everything in their midst!
To achieve all of the above and more Ice Tracks have extended the itinerary for this final Shackleton Centenary 2016 voyage allowing guests to fully explore the Southern Ocean’s most remote places before reaching the white continent. The voyage begins in Buenos Aires on October 30 and returns to Ushuaia Argentina on November 23. Travel will be on the vessel, Hebridean Sky http://www.ice-tracks.com/our-ships/hebridean-sky More information is available at this link: http://www.ice-tracks.com/destinations/antarctic/shackleton-centenary-voyage-2016/ .
