BILLINGS, Mont. – The tribes of the Columbia River Basin will be well represented at the "Battle of the Horse Nations” Indian Relay at Emerald Downs Racetrack June 12–14, 2015. Two of the world's top five teams hail from the Columbia River Valley – Omak Express and Grizzly Mountain, both representing the Colville Confederated Tribes – and will race against Umatilla Express, Emerald Downs' home team in the Relays.
Racing fans will be thrilled to see the current "All Nations Indian Relay Champions" Omak Express, led by rider Tyler Peasley. As reigning champion of the 2014 Relay Championships, Omak Express also showcased a strong performance in the Seminole Tribe exhibition in Brighton, Florida this past winter, winning first place. Fellow Colville Champion Grizzly Mountain, led by former Suicide Race Champion and Indian Relay World Champion Kerry Carden, consistently poses a threat to Omak’s victories. Carden's team features star rider Oliver Pakotas, regularly trading firsts with Omak Express.
Joining these tribes will be Katherine Minthorn's Umatilla Express team, who was third in PIHRA points for the region in 2014. All three captains are directors of PIHRA (Professional Indian Horse Racing Association), who sanction the race and organize it in conjunction with Emerald Downs Racetrack.
Other teams expected are Blackfeet Nation, Crow Nation, Shoshone-Bannock and Lakota, along with an All Nations team.
Races will be run Friday, June 12, 2015, through Sunday, June 14, 2015. Three races will be run each day, with the championships to be featured before Race 7 on Sunday.
