Buffalo, WYO: The Professional Indian Horse Racing Association (PIHRA) along with the Buffalo, Wyoming Chamber of Commerce and the Johnson Country Fair Board are proud to announce that the opening PIHRA-sanctioned Indian relay event will take place in historic Buffalo, Wyoming on June 11 and June 12, 2016.  The event is sponsored by Shipton’s Big “R” and the Crow Nation. www.letsrelay.com

“The Buffalo Days Indian Relay” will be a very important event in the PIHRA schedule,” shares Gary Fellers one of the PIHRA directors. “The competition for points is fierce and there are going to be many points awarded at this first race of the season. Teams will want to get a good start to accumulating points and in addition, there is significant money to be won.” Over $50,000 will be awarded in cash, prizes, and expense reimbursement making Buffalo one of the most significant races of the season.

As many as 20 adult Indian relay teams are expected to compete at the Buffalo Days Indian Relay; in addition, there will be kids relay races, junior relay races, Warriors races and Ladies races. The event will last 2 ½ hours each day and will begin Saturday evening at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday at 1 p.m. Large crowds are expected, so spectators are encouraged to arrive at least one hour before the event. Gates will open two hours before the event each day. The races will take place rain or shine. Until the formation of PIHRA four years ago, purses were typically much smaller. In the past three years, PIHRA races have added over $480,000 to Indian relay teams and families.  In addition to getting a shot at the estimated $100,000 in cash and prizes at the All Nations Indian Relay Championship in Billings, Montana, the season-end high point

team winner will be awarded a first place of $10,000 in Billings. The Championship will take place September 22-25 at the historic MetraPark Yellowstone Downs Grandstands. Tickets will be available through MetraPark ticket office.

Each season there are 15-20 sanctioned races where PIHRA member teams earn valuable points to allow them an invitation to the finals in Billings. Over 60 member teams and as many as 16 Indian nations compete all summer long in hopes to earn a spot at this coveted event that has been described as the Super Bowl of Indian relay.

“The board is very excited to start the race schedule in Buffalo” comments Jeanette Sassoon, PIHRA director. “Buffalo is a great little community who has opened their town to welcome us. It is the perfect place for our opening event because it is family and horse friendly. We love Buffalo and are hoping this may become an annual event.”

Sponsorships are welcome and available at every level. Please call PIHRA at 844-735-2977 Extension 4.
