Inca Trail Permit Process
Alpaca Expeditions Can Help
Cusco, Peru – Permits for trekking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu were established in 2000 when the Government of Peru began requiring permits for everyone on the Trail. They also began requiring that every group on the Inca Trail be accompanied by a licensed guide and tour operator. Tour Operators are the only ones who can apply for permits and only in a small window of time in October for the upcoming year.. Trekkers on the Inca Trail are limited to 500 per day for 4-7-day hikes and 250 additional for 2-day trips. These numbers include guests, guides and porters. Permits are strictly regulated by the Government of Peru. They are issued for a specific person and date and cannot be changed once they are issued. They also must exactly match the passport of the guest. Permits are carefully checked before groups depart and there are checkpoints along the way.
Before the permit process was put into place, the Inca Trail was a free-for-all with no regulation of numbers or access. This had a tremendous impact on the trails, campgrounds and surrounding areas; it was also dangerous. People who were not prepared for the arduous trek and the rough conditions were sometimes injured and had to turn back. The presence of tour operators and trained and licensed guides make sure the trail is clean and used properly and that guests are safe in their care.
Permits for the 2019 season of Inca Trail Treks go on sale in October. It’s important for those who want to visit Machu Picchu and hike this historic trail, book their trip as soon as possible.
