Bike and Barge Tours Explained

Springville, PA — If you’ve never heard of a Bike and Barge Tour, you are not alone.  This ‘new but old’ way to explore international destinations is a unique concept to many.  Many may think of a rusted old flat-bottomed freight chugging commercial waterways in an industrial wasteland environment.  In reality the barges used by TripSite are converted freighters redesigned to accommodate the active traveler of today. Also utilized are actual ships which are large enough to subdue the Mighty Danube and other historical European Rivers.  Open sea ships are specifically built for cyclists, refurbished Caciques or traditional fishing vessels.  The smallest ship in their programs have a capacity of 16 passengers and the largest holds 174.

The experience provided on Bike and Barge Tours is as varied as the vessel with the mornings beginning with breakfast on board your floating hotel.  Cyclists pack their own lunch and begin the day’s adventure after unloading their bikes.  The freedom to explore your surroundings allows guests to ride through cities, along country roads and charming scenes.  Whether guided or self-guided the day provides hours to immerse themselves into the culture, history sights and sounds of the destination.

Your boat is a beacon at day’s end where it will be moored to the overnight destination.  Once on-board it’s time to relax, compare notes with other guests and partake of a specially-prepared dinner.  Later there is time to walk historic streets or relax under a canopy of stars.

Much of the world’s history is intertwined with its waterways – from prehistory to modern times, rivers, canals and seas have coursed through humanity framing man’s experience with the land – setting up boundaries between them or drawing them together.  Water has carved out the landscapes upon which people have both built their lives, culture, and history.  Countless battles have been fought on the banks of great waterways and civilizations and ebbed and flowed with the current.  Bike and Barge Tours provide access on the very currents of water and time to an era when water was the only lifeblood that flowed through a land, Cycling through the landscape provides for a more profound experience than typical tourists can hope for.

Bike and Boat tours are generally 8 days in length; destinations are many!  Seafarers can find selections ranging from the South China Sea to the Adriatic, Mediterranean and Tyrrhenian.  If rivers are your thing you will find tours on the mighty Danube, Rhine, Moselle, Saar, Seine, barge tours In Holland, Belgium or France.

Give this new but old way to travel a try – you may find it the perfect way to experience a destination – unique accommodations, good food, great wine, history, culture, art and exhilarating activity!
