WANT Expeditions One of First Tour Operators on Ground
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – WANT Expeditions – the world leader in highly personalized, conservation-oriented small group travel – is one of the first tour operators on the ground following the reopening of Nyiragongo Volcano in Africa. After several months of work, Virunga National Park reopened in July and the volcano recently reopened to visitors on October 22, 2014.
Nyiragongo Volcano – located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo – is infamous for its extremely fluid lava that flows like water when it erupts. The volcano is one of eight located in the Virunga Mountains and is one of the most active volcanoes in Africa, with a 1.2 diameter summit caldera. Past eruptions of the volcano include instances in 1994 and 2002, causing destruction, loss of life and reformations within the earth’s landscape. While the volcano remains active, the volcanic activity is confined to the crater, where the world’s largest and most active lava lake exists.
Virunga National Park, UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to Nyiragongo Volcano, sits on the border of Uganda and Rwanda and is Africa’s oldest national park and also the continent’s most biologically diverse protected area. Due in large part to the company’s impeccable track record, world-class trips and expert guide and owner Jessica Pociask, WANT Expeditions remains at the forefront of important current events and is an acclaimed industry leader.
